Pay attention to town names, and you&#8217;ll often see it at the end, such as Reykjav\u00edk. While it&#8217;s a remote fishing village, this most-popular stand-alone-named V\u00edk has the full name V\u00edk \u00ed M\u00fdrdal. It&#8217;s located right on Route 1, between Sk\u00f3gafoss and J\u00f6kuls\u00e1rl\u00f3n. Population ~400, it has basic amenities and is a popular stopping point in addition to the natural areas near it. It begins as a nice easy walk, but the tempting end is build of large, uneven boulders. While it&#8217;s nothing like its famous black beach neighbor to the immediate west, Reynisfjara, it&#8217;s worth a visit on a nice day as it&#8217;s much less crowded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just to the west of V\u00edk, those coming from that direction will have a turn onto road 218 toward Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach (while there are plenty of great black sand\/pebble beaches around Iceland, this one does have great hexagonal basalt features), and Dyrh\u00f3laey, stunning rock formations. There is a small caf\u00e9 and bathrooms at Reynisfjara, but nothing at Dyrh\u00f3laey (if the area is even open).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reynisfjara<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/P1050737-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/P1050737-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/P1050737-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/P1050737-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/P1050737-1600x1200.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The hexagonal columns of basalt (dark gray volcanic rock) forming the cave here are the result of rapid cooling. You can see columnar basalt in similar locations, such as the northern coasts of Ireland and Scotland. (Side recommendation for a tour of the Northern Irish coast and a stop at the Giant&#8217;s Causeway!) You can also see some fascinating formations on the hike from Hellnar to Arnarstapi, on the south edge of west Iceland&#8217;s Snaefellsnes peninsula (2-2.5 hours north of Reykjav\u00edk). Be careful of the sea &#8211; waves are strong and not always predictable here, and several tourists have been swept away when turning their backs for a picture. Don&#8217;t be one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dyrh\u00f3laey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/10254014_768084026962_1584458106039803357_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/10254014_768084026962_1584458106039803357_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/10254014_768084026962_1584458106039803357_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carriecfirman.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/10254014_768084026962_1584458106039803357_n-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most southern point of the mainland. In 2015, I was able to drive an old Subaru to the top-most point up a rough gravel track at Dyrh\u00f3laey, however, nearly the entire area was closed in summer 2018 due to erosion. If it&#8217;s open, this top area offers great views, but down near the parking area, there&#8217;s various other-worldly rock formations to explore.
